“I thought this was dangerous,” I said as we stole out of a backdoor of the hotel.

“It is, but something about tonight makes me feel invincible,” he grinned as he pulled me off the sidewalk. His heavy boots splashed through a puddle on the side of the road. He turned to me, and from beneath the heavy hood of his trench coat, his blue eyes shone in his pale, feathered face. I nearly wept at the sight of his fake flesh replaced with the beauty of his real form. I hadn’t realized how much I missed it.

Beneath his long coat, he wore tight compression shirt that kept his wings nearly undetectable but also molded to every hard muscle of his chest. I had to look away.

His fingers laced with mine, and I subconsciously rubbed my thumb over the soft feathers on the back of his hand.

I felt reckless. All my life, I had to make calculated moves. I saved energy for work. To defend myself. I kept an eye on my surroundings at all times. No one looked out for me, so I had to look out for myself. But here with Kazian, stealing through the streets of Baxint in the dark, I felt like I could do anything. Having slept the day away, we had the whole night, and I had no intention of sleeping again. I want to make the most of this time that I was free. And that I had Kaz to myself.

He seemed as excited as I was, and I felt an itch under my skin, a surging rise of impulsiveness that set my blood on fire. I kicked an errant can and watched it skitter over a road grate.

Light. I felt light. Like I had my own wings and could take flight at any time. With my hand in Kaz’s, I didn’t think about what was to come. I thought about now. This moment.

We stole down alleyways and climbed over fences. Kazian stopped at a food truck and bought us artificial chicken skewers, careful to hide his face as he handed over money while wearing a dark glove on his hand. We ate them messily, smearing grease on our lips and mouths. Kazian cleaned his face with careful licks of his long tongue, while I swiped mine with the back of my hand.

Baxint wasn’t a sleepy city. Buildings with bars and nightclubs rattled with the pounding base of music while partiers spilled out onto the streets, sloshed on cheap liquor that was tasted like gasoline. Normally I wouldn’t have been caught dead on the streets at this time, but I had the hulking figure of Kazian at my side. Even without seeing his face or knowing what he was, they crossed to the other side when he came.

Tonight makes me feel invincible, he’d said. I felt it too.

We snuck into a movie theater that played old westerns, and we spent an hour watching cowboys point six-shooters at each other. I’d never been to a movie theater in my life, and Kazian laughed deeply when the actors made terrible jokes.
